Blank and Cables works closely with designers and architects to imagine and create truly one-of-a-kind furniture. This post features furniture creations in California and New York City. Every piece is manufactured by the skilled Blank and Cables team at our fabrication facility in Oakland, CA.
For this mid-century home, perched atop the rolling hills of California, an update was long overdue. Blank and Cables was called to create several magical elements for this special project. An enormous but elegant powder coated, mild steel and specialty glass sunscreen, overlooking the Silicon Valley landscape, impresses and protects, both guests and residents alike, from excessive heat and inclement weather. Inside, Blank and Cables employed laser cutting technology, to cut 7,000 holes, in order to create a free standing and illuminated art-niche. Several over-sized, thick, frame-less sliding glass panels that divide the living room and kitchen, were fabricated by Blank and Cables. At the home's core, a floor-to-ceiling blackened steel fireplace and a matching set of blackened steel interior steps add the perfect touch of raw texture and elegance to this hillside oasis.
This project set out to open the floor plan of a traditional and enclosed stairway found in this remodeled, historic San Francisco home. While maintaining the historical integrity of this unique home, Blank and Cables manufactured a custom glass and steel stairway with custom machined stainless steel standoffs attached to steel and wood treads. The stairway leads to a third-story glass and steel bridge with a see-through acrylic walkway that allows natural light to shine throughout this century old home.
This updated farm house will feature a staircase unlike any other in the Bay Area. Designed to welcome guests to the heart of the house, this staircase, and its floating overhead walkway, will allow the owners to display their unique and rare collection of books upon the shelves of this towering 3-story bookcase. Heavy, thick and fully welded steel plates make up the floating steps and risers, which are then clad with hand-selected and hewn solid redwood treads. The elegant railing, with redwood handrail cap, floats above the staircase using custom hidden connectors designed and manufactured by Blank and Cables. The books will be illuminated using custom made light fixtures integrated into the shelves themselves.
This San Francisco Sea Cliff neighborhood home needed an extraordinary rooftop living space with the goal of taking advantage of the breathtaking views of the Golden Gate. Blank and Cables shop manufactured and field installed this custom rooftop solarium crafted from machined structural steel and highly specialized, custom-made glass panels. Blank and Cables lifted the structure and associated glass panels through the use of cranes with specialized lifting attachments. Now, residents can fully enjoy their remarkable views of The City from the comfort of their new solarium.
The owners of this unusual octagonal shaped home, tucked away across the San Francisco Bay, engaged Blank and Cables to help them optimize a unique and tiny space. Blank and Cables used sheet steel, wood and acrylic to create the perfect closet for this one-of-a-kind home. Steel was used as the primary, vertical supports, with all of the shelving manufactured from sanded acrylic. Primarily focusing on the use of vertical space, Blank and Cables built upward to maximize the amount of storage space and created a one-off steel rolling ladder with custom-made hardware.
Our neighbors, Red Bay Coffee, opened the doors to their beautiful new headquarters located right next to Blank and Cables. For the opening ceremony, Red Bay Coffee opened the doors to their "coffee dojo" as they shared their ambitions and goals in their brand new production facility.
In the article Open House by Allison McCarthy in Modern Luxury Magazine, a detailed tour is taken of a 'traditional-meets-modern Craftsmen family cottage' in California transformed by Bulter Armsden Architects. Blank and Cables had the pleasure of crafting a custom nickel and corion dining room table, a central gathering area of any family home.

One of our custom projects has been featured on Houzz.com! The property is a local San Francisco home renovation of which we had the pleasure of assisting. Translucent panels and basalt wood and metal shelving were used to transform the pantry into a sleek and utilitarian space, while translucent panels on the lower level separate the laundry room and family room. Each feature adds a lightweight and elegant solution to this modern space. We’re very excited about it being highlighted on the web!
For this years Decorator Showcase in San Francisco, Glenda Flaim designed a chiseled yet spacious bedroom for Butler Armsden Architects which included side tables fabricated by Blank & Cables. Flaim’s design was inspired by Bay Area architectural legend, Julia Morgan, the designer of the mansion that housed the 2015 Decorator Showcase. In Julia Morgan’s long and prolific career she designed over 700 buildings in California. Her legacy flows through the Bay Area, having made her mark in designing buildings such as Hearst Castle, Chapel of the Chimes, and Berkeley City Club. Her many architectural contributions to Mills College included their gymnasium, the first reinforced concrete structure on the west coast. Flaim’s muted and minimal design, which is reminiscient of Morgan’s pioneering use of concrete, includes blackened, waterjet cut steel side tables fabricated by Blank & Cables.
We are honored to have our Blank and Cables project featured in Traditional Home Magazine! Our additions to the beautiful Napa home featured on the cover of Traditional Home Magazine included custom designed and built trundle beds and bunk beds with ladders, surrounding barn doors, a custom bed frame, a blackened hardwood dining table, and a rustic bronze and stone fountain. We also created a large handmade bronze entry gate to introduce the whole property. These unique additions complete the astonishing modern country look of this northern California home.
